Matthew Commin joined The Perse Upper School in 2017. As part of his work in the Physics department, he has developed a classroom-based research project regarding the use of hinge questions. As Matthew explains, hinge questions can help to structure a lesson as well as acting as a diagnostic tool for teachers:
“Hinge questions in the Physics classroom can offer challenging and motivational questions for pupils, as well as offering an excellent opportunity for assessment for learning (AfL). I intend to construct a sequence of lessons that contain clearly identifiable hinge points. In addition to teacher observations and the pupils’ answers, I will also conduct a feedback survey at the end of the project to gather information on pupils’ perceptions.”
