Using Music to Teach Latin at A-Level

Staff Ruffle A

Alice Ruffle is Teacher of Classics at The Perse Upper School and an accomplished musician.  Alice is combining her interests in her induction research project.  She is investigating whether Latin texts set to music can aid the learning of vocabulary and the ability to decode new words.

“Latin teaching traditionally centres around texts from the Classical period; I believe learners can benefit from an awareness of the wider ways in which Latin has been used (e.g. in the church and as a ‘lingua franca’) and that musical settings can provide a memorable way of expanding knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.”
